Does Alcohol Interact With Valium?

I was drinking alcohol and took some valium (2.5 mg) and got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and passed out into the bathtub. I woke up to a gash on my forehead bleeding profusely. Got taken to the ER. They catscanned, EKG and chest x-ray. Said I was ok. Got 5 stitches. 5 days later, I still have a headache and a pinching feeling on my skull above the cut. I never did get a bump on my head. What should I do now? I m going tomorrow to have the stitches out (hopefully)...

Hi,

Mixing alcohol and Valium can lead to mild to very severe and even lethal consequences. You should never mix these two things. The consequences may range from disorientation, confusion, dizziness, nausea, stumbling to unconsciousness, coma and death. You have already experienced dizziness, confusion, stumbling and unconsciousness.

Fortunately, no bad consequences have resulted and as X-Ray, CT Scan and EKG came out normal, there is really nothing to worry about. The headache and pinching feeling in the area of injury may be due to the trauma of fall and also due to stitches. You can take Paracetamol (Crocin) 500 mg 2-3 times a day. It is available available over the counter. It can help in relieving pain.

There is little else that we can do until the wound is totally healed. The pain and uncomfortable feelings will subside with healing automatically.

For future, do take care not to mix Valium with any of these: alcohol, opioid pain medications, heroin-like illicit drugs, tranquilizers like xanax, and other sleep medications.

It is always safe to discuss drug interactions with the prescribing doctor to prevent harmful consequences.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
