Does A Period After Taking 'norethisterone' Confirm Absence Of Pregnancy?

33 years old, 10st 7llb, 5ft 4"
I took levonelle 3 months ago and had what I think was a withdrawal bleed a week after taking it. Periods have been absent since, I have done 6 home pregnancy tests, GP urine sample and blood test all show negative. My Gp prescribed me 5 days of norethisterone to induce my period. I have now finally had a period 3 days after stopping the tablets. However I am still experiencing a lot of pregnancy symptoms. When I had my daughter 8 years ago all pregnancy tests showed negative until 11 weeks. Does this period after norethisterone confirm I am not pregnant.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The hormone in Northisterone is similar to a form of the hormone Progesterone, which is produced during a normal pregnancy. So the side effects of the Northisterone most likely are causing your symptoms.

The fact that you have performed numerous pregnancy tests that have been negative also really rule out pregnancy at this point.

You certainly might conceive later, but the withdrawal bleeding from the Northisterone indicates that you were not pregnant at the time. If you were pregnant, the progesterone produced by the pregnancy would have prevented the withdrawal bleeding.

So in summary, you can be reassured that at this point you are not pregnant.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
