Does A Hernia In The Upper Abdomen Cause Bowel Incontinence?

I have a hernia in my upper stomach, for about 8 years or so. I m also on welfare and use the county for my medical needs. They keep putting me off for the surgery partly do to my weight, I need to lose some pounds before they ll do anything for me but my problem is that it is causing me many other problems. My syatica has been acting up now for about a year or so and giving me a great deal of pain and I have now lost control of my bowels. I believe this is the result of my hernia. I would like to know if I m right. I just don t know much more of this pain that I can take. Thanking you in advance for your time.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Sciatica occurs because of compression or damage to the sciatic nerve which is a nerve that forms from nerves coming out from the spine. It can be very painful for some persons, as for you. You may need a combination of different types of pain killers along with physiotherapy.

It is not connected to the hernia.

It is possible , if there is a history of issues with the weight, then this can cause further pressure on the bones of the back which can then affect the sciatic nerve.

The loss of bowel control may also be linked to the back. It is important to remember that the nerves that control the bladder and bowel function come out from the lower back.
If these nerves are being compressed or irritated then this can cause abnormal function of either the bladder or bowel or both.

I hope this helps
