Does Nexium Cause Mouth Ulcers?

I have been suffering with a sore, puckered, red mouth - mostly the inside of my bottom lip. My lips themselves feel very funny. Saw a periodontist to said it was extreme, chronic dry mouth and prescribed a steroid liquid that I swish with twice a day. I use Biotene, etc. I am wondering of it could have something to do with long-term Nexium use? I have taken acid reflux meds for probably 15+ years, changing them intermittently when they seem ineffective.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

it looks like you have Inflammation inside mouth causing Apthous Stomatitis leading to redness and ulceration which can be due to Dry mouth or Xerostomia..
However dry mouth can be due to taking Proton pump inhibitor like Nexium or others while other causes can be:
-Severe dehydration,Side effects of medications if you take any,Salivary gland dysfunction, Nerve damage supplying salivary glands, Oral infections like thrush, Sjogren's Syndrome..etc..

For dry mouth chew sugarfree chewing gums.. -Drink plenty of water.
-Avoid regular mouthwash and use specialized mouthwash that are formulated for dry mouth patients like Biotene..
-You can also instil artificial saliva drops..
-Suck tart candies as it also stimulates saliva flow..

For pain and discomfort gargling with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine and sucking ice pop can help..

If does not improve consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
