Does Melatonin Taken For Anxiety Causes Hormonal Imbalances?
Not sleeping Okay I'm 15 years old 5' 7” and weigh 155 pounds, I've had anxiety since I was about 8 years old and always had trouble falling asleep, so I started taking melatonin every night before became it worked, but after awhile I felt as of I wasn't getting into a deep sleep. I did some research and everything I found was negative and said that melatonin messes with your hormones. My track coach also said that it was bad to take sleeping pills, so I stopped taking them and now I lay innes every night for atleast 2 hours trying to fall asleep. What can I do? Is melatonin really bad for you? And the only medication I take are daily vitamins and zyrtec and allergy pill.
Hi, yes melatonin at your age can lead to hormonal problems. At puberty melatonin decreases compared to sexual hormones allowing for sexual maturation, some studies even suggest that this decrease is the cue for the body to start such maturation. So I advise to stop taking sleep pills whatever kind. Focus on sports, eating well and getting hygienic sleep; meaning avoid mobile phone or computer usage before sleep. For dealing with anxiety refer to a psychiatrist, maybe at school they have a counselor for students you can talk to. Avoid pills and medications to induce sleep.
