Does Melatonin Interact With Diphenhydramine?

For the past month, I have been taking 5 mg of melatonin and 50 mg of diphenhydramine when I go to sleep. Lately, it seems my depression Is worsening. Do you think it is dangerous to combine these two sleeping aids? Do you think I should stop taking them cold turkey or do you think I should wean off of them, and if so, what would be the best way?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
No need to stop taking those two drugs. Both may cause increased sedation but there is no available evidence for interaction between those two causing depression. Depression may be due to other causes as drowsiness cannot be aligned in par with depression
