Does Marijuana Affect Antipsychotic Drugs?

My brother has schizoeffective disorder. Does marjiana interfere with the ability for his physic meds to work ? I believe they do and he insists it helps. I know he has recently smoked some pot, and he is experiencing delusions and hallucinations, even tho he is taking his medications.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM

Marijuana is cannabis and it is an activating substance. The drug is known to cause acute psychosis in a lot of individuals. Your brother is already on anti-psychotic drugs for Schizoaffective disorder. The drug can alter the levels of antipsychotic medicines so should be avoided with these medicines. But main risk of using Marijuana in patients of schizoaffective disorders is precipitation of psychotic symptoms by drug itself. He is having delusions, hallucinations etc symptoms and most likely such symptoms are occurring due to smoking of Marijuana. I would advise you to ask him to quit marijuana as this will make the situation worse only.

Thanks. Hope this helps you.
