Does Levonelle Emergency Contraceptive Pill Alter Menstrual Cycle?

hi i took levonelle emergency contraceptive on the 21st Aug 12 hrs after a condom broke during sex, then got what seemed like a normal 7 day period on the 10th Sept. As of yet i have not started my period for Oct, this is unusual as my normal cycle length is 28-29 days and very regular. I have taken a pregnancy test (16/10/14) which gave a negative result. Me and my partner have not had unprotected sex since this incident. Is it likely the levonelle may have altered my cycle causing this second period to be late?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Emergency contraceptive pill works by altering the hormonal levels suddenly to prevent pregnancy. As a result of these altered hormones, menstrual cycle changes. This is a very common side effect observed with emergency contraceptive pills.

Your new cycle started on 10th September. So you should expect your periods on 10th October. However, if they do not come by 20th October and your pregnancy test shows negative, it is advisable to see a gynecologist for pelvic examination and further investigations to find out the cause of miised periods.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
