Hi, I am a 53yo male with congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes and stage 4 sever ckd. My cardiologist has had me on fenofibrate for about as long as my kidney function has been going down and he has also had me on atorvostatin for several years. Should I be concered about the possible damage these statins may be causing to my kidneys? when I asked my cardio he told me that the benifits out weighed the risks. Is that a valid response?
Hi & Welcome. It does not cause direct kidney damage.
Fenofibrate is a fibrate which is mainly prescribed to reduce high serum triglycerides and also high LDL cholesterol levels along with statins.
Generally it is well tolerated, however it may cause stomach upset, myopathy (muscle pain, tenderness or weakness), liver dysfunction, and gallstones.
It may also cause a serious condition called rhabdomyolysis (increased breakdown of muscle proteins) resulting in myoglobinuria (increased loss of muscle protein through urine) altering the color of the urine and which may impair the kidney functions.
As long as you don't suffer from myopathy or liver dysfunction you may continue to take this prescribed medication as high triglycerides and high cholesterol levels are major risk factors for the heart disease and other conditions.
