Hi... I have hashimotos disease. Have been going down hill over last 6 months as it really kicks in. Buggered by lunchtime just raising kids and working.. friend gave me 4 duromine 40mg tablets to help me out. Instant energy and felt better plus might actually lose some weight since its piling on no matter what I do... am wanting some more tablets and hoping that if I see my doc that it will be easy but want to go in with some info behind me to support my need to kick start my metabolism. . Do u know if duromine is a commonly used drug to help hashimotos sufferers? Or wud it be detrimental to the thyroid over time (not that its any good to start with!)

General & Family Physician, Dr. Snis Khan's Response
Yes,despite the link between hypothyroidism(hashimoto)and weight gain, we also propose that in some cases, if those with underactive thyroids actively forced themselves to maintain a normal activity level, they may only result in gaining a few pounds. Doctors explain that with many cases of weight gain as a result of hypothyroidism, due to symptoms such as depression and fatigue, sufferers are often too tired or lack the motivation to exercise and so, fall into an unhealthy cycle of decreased activity and over-eating as an emotional outlet. Therefore, in addition to medications which normalize thyroid hormone levels, sufferers of hypothyroidism who need to lose weight could greatly benefit from taking weight loss medications, such as Duromine..(phentermine).
