Does Amlodipine Cause Edema In The Feet?

My husband has developed edema in his foot and now its developed in his other foot. he feels it s a side effect of the amolodipine which he has been on for a couple of years. He stopped taking it three days ago. At what point should the edema in his feet dissipate if the medicine was causing it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Yes you are right. Amlodipine causes edema of foot due to retention of water. This side effect is harmless and easily manageable. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause brain hemorrhage. Your husband has high BP since a long time.

Advice
1.     Restart amlodipine as suggested by your doctor
2.     Add hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg daily per oral after meal. It will decrease leg swelling
3.     Do not stop any medicine without your doctor’s suggestion
4.     Take second opinion with a cardiologist for review of treatment
5.     Keep your leg elevated by keeping 2 pillows under your leg when you are lying down
6.     Stay active and focus on stretching and moving the legs and hands
7.     Stand up or move around at least once every hour
8.     Consume less salt preferably less than 2 gram in a day
9.     Regular exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days in a week. The best types of exercise for lowering BP are walking, jogging, cycling, swimming and dancing
10.     Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables
11.     Avoid smoking, alcohol, coffee and caffeinated beverages
12.     Ask your husband to lose extra weight if your husband is overweight and keep body mass index between 19 and 25. BMI is calculated by formula BMI = Weight in Kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters)
13.     Reduce metal stress because stress activates sympathetic system and increases BP
14.     Measure BP regularly and be in touch with your doctor
I hope this information will help you. I will be happy if you ask another question
Thanks
