Does Amitriptyline Result In Hypertension?

I had my amitriptyline increased from 10 mg to 20 mg at bedtime. Can it cause elevated blood pressure and rapid heatbeat. I notice at bedtime an increase in both these symptoms shortly after taking the rx. I take it for irritable bowel symptom but noticed these symptoms after increasing the dosage about 10 days ago.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant drug, also used for pain. It affects neurotransmitter or chemical in the brain. For irritable bowel syndrome, Amitriptyline provides visceral analgesic effects, reduces abdominal pain and stool frequency, and increases global well-being variably.

There are many side effects of using it, such as: agitation, arrhythmia (heart rhythm disorder), hypertension, ECG changes, headache, tachycardia (fast heartbeat), insomnia, fatigue, headache, palpitation, etc., more side effects come in more dosage. This drug should be used with caution in person with cardiovascular disease.

May I know do you have cardiovascular disease or any history of it? Did you use another drug that may have interactions with Amitriptyline? You should tell your doctor if you take another drug together with Amitriptyline. If these symptoms get worsen, please contact your treating doctor. You may need dosage adjustment or drug modification. Please do not stop taking Amitriptyline suddenly it may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Asti Yuliadha
