Hello my mother was given alprax and shes been taking it since 7 months like 1 or 2 tabs a day. She has havin these side effects now: Hands r shivering Loss of memory Imbalance while walking Talking very irrelevantly Loss of clarity in speech shes 69. Doctor advised to Cut down dosage to 1/2 tab only once in morning. I want to know are these side egfects curable with gradual tapering of tablet? Will she be a normal person again snd how long it takes . We r very tensed
Hi! Alprax is recommended to be given in very low doses to the elderly for short periods (average 2-4 weeks) as it is a habit forming drug. It appears your mother was given a relatively higher dose for a much longer period and therefore has developed the classic side effects. In my view the medication should be tapered gradually, under supervision, to prevent withdrawal symptoms from emerging. The side effects should resolve with time. In case the symptoms persist/worsen you'd do well to get a neuropsychiatric evaluation done to rule out another coexisting illness. All the best!
