Do Cold And Cough Cause Swelling Of Eardrums?

Hi Dr Luthra,
My 5 year old daughter has been having pain in her ear since this afternoon.
The paediatrician at MoolChand said she seems to be having swelling in her eardrum.
She has suffered from pain in the ear about 6 months ago as well.
She is generally having cold and cough problem during the winters.
Could it be related to her cold and cough problem?
Could she damage her hearing in this manner?
Best regards,
Devendra Singh

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain it seems that your daughter is suffering from chronic ear infections and if she gets frequent cough and cold it can be a probable cause for recurring ear infection as there is a direct communication between ear and throat via Eustachian tube..

Recurring ear infection can lead to inflammation of the ear drums thereby leading to swelling of eardrums..
Repeated infection and swelling of eardrum can also lead to perforation of eardrum and in that case there can be loss of hearing too..

I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get her thoroughly evaluated and the physician can also advise otoscopy to confirm the diagnosis..
In case of infection he can advise her antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkillers, decongestants and antibiotic ear drops..
Avoiding excess water exposure like swimming and picking of the ears should be done..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
