Do Antibiotics Cause Irregularities In Menstruation?

I had my period last August 16, and I had a vaginal abcess and took antibiotics. September 2 I had my period again, it was very unsual to have an early period. Now, this week I have my period again. Is it true that antibiotics affect menstruation? Why do I have 2 periods in 1 month?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concern.
Based on your history, I don't think antibiotics could be considered as primary cause for the menstrual irregularities - it is not reported to influence menstrual periods as significant as yours.
Periods can be irregular at times, specially if you suffer from stress, infection (like vaginal abscess) or emotional disturbances.
Wait for few days as your period might regularize. If not, you should get investigated for other causes of irregular menses like hormonal disturbances, diseases of the uterus or ovaries. A sonography can help in identifying the cause.
Hope this will help.
