Dizziness, Vomiting, Headache. EEG Normal. Thoughts?

Hi= my son s syptoms are: starts out with dizziness , then vomiting , sometimes gets a headache . Then he sleeps as is completely exhausted. Lasts a few hours total. Typical temp when this happens is 97 degrees. Counting today, this has happened 4 times. Started 4 weeks ago, happened 8/22, 8/25, 8/28 and now 9/18. He had an EEG 2 weeks ago which they said was normal. They are now saying maybe an atypical migraine , but I think we are all just guessing. He does not seem to have what I think would be migraine symptoms. I hate to medicate him 24/7 for something that we don t know he has. THoughts???

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I would agree with your doctor's diagnosis. Based on the symptoms, the most likely diagnosis is migraine, Migraine is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms, and no tests are required to confirm the diagnosis. MRI brain and EEG if done, would be normal in migraine. Medications are required to prevent future episodes of headache, dizziness, etc, if the person suffers more than two episodes per month.

The only other differential diagnosis in this case would be seizures. However, the EEG is normal, and the episodes are longer (usual seizure episodes would not last more than a few minutes).

Best wishes,
Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
Senior Consultant Neurologist
