Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Difficulty In Swallowing Food & Drinking Due To Pain
I took an antibiotic (clindamycin) capsule on Thursday night (20th Dec). Since then I have a pain in my chest - like it seems something is stuck there in the esophagus. I find it hard to swallow food and drink and is painful. I have been avoiding spicy food, chocolate, lemon juice. I have been eating honey in the hope that it may help to soothe and heal. Is it possible that the capsule could have done some damage to the esophagus on the way down? Is there any other home natural remedy to relieve me of this pain and what seems like as if a toffee is stuck in my chest? Please help. Thank you.
Hi, If I were your treating Doctor for this case of severe , I would come up with these possibilities, these include:
The first possibility is of esophagitis. Diagnosis can be confirmed by upper GI endoscopy. Try raising the head of your bed about four inches with blocks. It also might help to avoid eating or drinking for two hours before you lie down. To help control the stomach acid, one should not drink alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them, or eat chocolate or spicy or greasy foods. Also take some antacid but if the symptoms are severe, then you may need drugs like proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole). The second possibility is of esophageal spasm as it may l pain which is worse when you swallow something. To help control esophageal spasms you cause do all above described measures. it is diagnosed by Esophageal manometry testing. If you will not get better than i suggest you should visit your physician to have these tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate to ask. I will be happy to answer your questions.
