Difficulty In Breathing, Cough. Prescribed Symbacort. Have Smoking Habit

i have been having trouble breathing... only at night when in the supine position. it has been occuring 3 to 4 times a week. I am 44 and yes i do smoke about 1 pack a week. No issues during the day but i started to cough for the dast week constantly...no symptoms of cold or flu.. seen my family doctor and he refused to give me a chest x-ray and told me to take symbacort for a week.. its been 5 days and it has increased my coughing spells terribly... i dont have the shortness of breath at night but im not sleeping much due to the coughing..

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
I would come up with these possibilities for such type cough in night, these includes.
1 Allergic bronchitis , since you are a chronic smoker from long time so this might have developed an allergy , so cough.
2 Asthmatic allergic bronchitis , diagnosis can be confirmed by physical examination. In this type of cough, usually there develops bronchoconstriction .Bronchoconstriction causes whistling sound ,hence cough. When temperature falls ( in night ) more constriction and more cough as in your case.
3 Pleural effusion , diagnosis can be confirmed by X ray chest. In this patient develops cough ,when lie down in supine position.
In my opinion consult one more physician and get his opinion ( 2nd).
Good luck. Dr. HET
