Did Ultrasound, Shows Intra Uterine Gestational Sac. Internal OS Is Closed, Early Intra Uterine Gestation. Problem?

My LMP is 26 march 2013. I had my ultra sound done yesterday, Report says well defined intra uterine gestational sac. No sonologically appreciable foetal pole within the sac. The internal OS is closed. No collection seen. No adnexal mass or collection seen. Impression:- early intra uterine gestation of about 5-6 weeks. Dr. asked me to have one more ultasound after two weeks. Please suggest. I am very worried. This is my first pregnancy.

Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
Your ultrasonography shows 5-6weeks of pregnancy but no gestational sac and no foetal pole. This is not a normal finding in ultrasonography.
So you should wait for another 2 weeks for ultrasonography to see the foetal cardiac activity and foetal pole or sac.
Good luck.
Take care.

OBGYN Dr. Shanti Vennam's  Response
Hi,
Normally, a gestational sac would be visible by at least by the 5th week of pregnancy. Sometimes, owing to poor resolution, an early gestational sac may not be visible. In such a situation, circumstantial evidence like decidual reaction, serial titres of serum beta-hCG and serial sonograms are useful. Usually, repeat sonograms, preferably through the trans-vaginal route, give a proper opinion and usually resolve the issue, so, please do not worry. Meanwhile take as much rest as possible, avoid stress and sexual intercourse. Wish you good luck.
