Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes & Now Developed Gestational Diabetes

Hi I have type 2 diabetes I had insulin resistence from 1999 and was treated with metformin for 12 months everything balanced till I had kids. I developed gestational diabetes with my second pregnancy and about 12 months later crossed the line to diabetes. I originally was put on 2 diaformin morning and night but as I lost weight the dose was lowered to one 500mg in morning. I also had minimal thyroid function and am on thyroxin one 25mg a day. I have recently moved and the new doctor was concerned my blood sugar was 6.2 in a fasting test and changed me to glucobay is this a good diabetic tablet as he didn t really give me any info just the script. I have over the last 15 months lost 30kg by cutting out sugar and having the medications.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Glucobay is a medication prescribed to non-insulin dependent diabetics who do not respond well to either dietary control or dietary control plus medications. This medication will help control your glycemic profile and also prevent further weight loss.

Your initial medications were to promote weight loss, but as you have lost so much weight it was not the ideal medication for you anymore. Glucobay is a good medication, and if at all it does not help you much then we could shift to sulfonylureas which are ideal for the thin diabetic population.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
