Hello! Thanks for query. Tardive dyskinesia is a difficult-to-treat form of dyskinesia, a disorder resulting in involuntary, repetitive body movements. This neurological disorder frequently appears after long-term or high-dose use of antipsychotic drugs mainly with typical antipsychotics. In most cases, tardive dyskinesia (TD) resulting from the use of medications known as dopamine receptor antagonists, is incurable and irreversible. It is however treatable and manageable. How well this disorder can be managed depends largely on: How soon the disorder is diagnosed How long the patient was on the medication Age and gender of the patient Currently, the only approved drug for treating tardive dyskinesia disorders is tetrabenazine, which is a dopamine depleting drug.
