Diagnosed With Osteomyelitis In Foot, Staph Infection, Ulcer. Done Partial Amputation. On Levaquin. Had Biopsy. What Else Can Be Done?

Last year I was diagnosed with osteomylitis in my right foot had a sore on big toe that would not heal.
I am not diabetic but I do have neuropathyfrom a bad back surgery that went awry.7 rs ago.
They did a partial amputation on great toe.it healed.but it had been a years worth of total contact casts splints off loading etc.
Now left great toe was diagnosed with a infection of staph would not heal so from December to July 1.then they amputated all of great toe.2days later was admited with a severe local and systemic infection.
just had recent surgery 6wks ago to close wound and my doc wanted a deep bone biopsy to check for anything being missed.well I had osteomylitis yet again.I still have a wound opento the bonestarting 4 th week of levaquin.
how do they know they got all the infection?my right foot now has another ulcer that seems like its just melting my tissue away.and they say oh your fine..they always say that and I always seem to have lingering infection.how do they know they got it all and it hasn't spread.they did MRI and bone scans only to show no osteomylitis yet it is present and has been tested and shown to be in both feet at one time or another.is it just that it never went away..how do I question these super experienced doctors that have been dealing with this with me now fir two years..thank you..m.miller

Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concern and MRSA is one of the common organisms causing osteomyelitis. MRSA is methicillin resistant staphylococcus which usually is also resistant to many other antibiotics. Vancomycin is the drug of choice for this infection. As osteomyelitis is a deep infection there are chances of it getting missed while amputation. MRSA can be easily confirmed by culture sensitivity of the discharge from wound or ulcer. I suggest you get the test done and take appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Thanks.
