Diagnosed With Osteochondritis Dessecands. Suggested Surgery. What Can Be Done?
3 years ago I was diagnosed with osteochondritis dessecands under the trochlea of my left knee. My doctor went in and screwed the piece of lose cartilage back on and it fully healed and I resumed playing competitive tennis. Now, on a recent MRI, it shows that the same exact thing happened again to the same knee in the same spot. My doctor had never seen this before. He told me to shut it down for 2 months but he might need to operate again. If he does this, he says the recovery might not be as successful. Will I ever be able to play varsity tennis for my college ever again?

Osteochondritis dessicans (OCD) is characterised by local aseptic bone necrosis which is commonly seen in young athletes.
There are many modalities of treatment available based on the extent and severity of the disease. They are
* autologous chondrocyte implantation with bone graft
* Chondral resurfacing techniques
* osteochondral autologous transplantation
* bone-cartilage paste graft
* bone-marrow-derived cell transplantation technique
Which of the above procedures is to be done in your case will be decided by your treating doctor. You can resume playing tennis after these procedures but with due precautions.
