Diagnosed With Gall Stones, Amylase High. Could Something Be Wrong With Pancreas ?

Hi I have recently been diagnosed with gall stones, however the consultant has sent me for other tests ie cat scan, and now an endoscope, he says the amalayse is high and there may be something wrong with my pancreas. Unfortunatley he is away on holiday and his secretary rang to give me the appointment for the endoscope and was unable to offer me any further information. As you can imagine I am a little distressed and wonder what else it could be other then the diagnosed call stones, i wonder if you canoffer me any further information, many thanks AAAAA

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Due to raised amylase level ,you doctor wants to find out the reason.
It is raised in many conditions like pancreatitis, cholecystitis, tumour of pancreas and prostate, severe gastroenteritis etc.
He is just finding out the reason and treat it accordingly.
Get well soon.

Take Care

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Akhilesh Dubey's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
After going through your history,You are having Gallstones and found to have raised serum amylase level, which is an enzyme measured if high we suspect pancreatic disease.
CT scan is good test to assess pancreas and Endoscopy to find out possible cause.
Serum Lipase can also be tested which is more specific for pancreatitis.
Pancreatitis is related to alcohol consumption commonly so if you take alcohol please stop it completely.
If you have deranged Lipid Profile control it with diet and medicines and if you are over weight reducing weight will help.
If you are not satisfied with doctor seek second opinion or change the hospital or centre.
Hope this helps.
Take care
Good Luck
