Diagnosed With GERD After Complaining Of Cough, Chest Pain. Explain?
Hi doctor, Four days ago i came to clinic, complaining a chestpain and coughing at night. Doctor asked me if i like to eat spicy food and coffee, and i said yes. The doctor said that i got a disease named GERD . What kind of disease GERD is? The doctor prescribed me sucralfate and esomeprazole . Anything else i can do to make my self better? Because yesterday at noon, i still have bad cough. Thanks.
hi cimi,
GERD is gastro esophageal reflux disease. It can occur due to anatomical dysfunction of lower esophagial sphincter(opening) or due to pathological problems with the LES.It usually results in a lax lower opening of the oesophagus which is other wise supposed to open only during eating/swallowing.Because of the laxity the food/acidic gastric content can reflux back to the oesophagus and some time even upto the upper part and result in cough.
Other than medications, regular and timely eating habits,a small walk after meals,a 30 degree elevation of head end while sleeping and less spicy foods should bring you relief.
All the best
