Delayed Periods. Pelvic Ultrasound Showing Bulky Uterus With Fibroids. Worried

Hi doctor, I had bleeding with two big clots, my doctor thought this could have been a threatened abortion since my periods was three days late. The doctor referred me for PELVIC ultrasound and the results indicated that my uterus is bulky with multiple (approximately 7) fibroids, largest fundal subserosal measuring 5.54cm x 5.27cm. There is no evidence of intrauterine gestation seen, endometrial thickness is 6.2mm, both ovaries appear normal and no fluid is seen in the pouch of douglas. What could be wrong with me? am 38 years, married and no child yet. Ruth

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

Your diagnosis is already mentioned in your query. You have been diagnosed to have uterine fibroids, which cause abnormal uterine bleeding, pain, and other symptoms.

Treatment includes:
-Medication (GnRH agonists, progestin releasing IUD's, angrodens like Danazol, oral contraceptive drugs, etc.)
-Sugery (hysterectomy indicated for woman above or around the age of 40 years who have completed their family or myomectomy, FUS-focused ultrasound surgery which enables preservation of the uterus, myolysis, endometrial ablation, etc.)

You are 38 years old, which means you are still young for a hysterectomy, but as a doctor I can only suggest treatment options, and I would prefer avoiding a hysterectomy this early in your life. But do discuss all the options with your doctor, and reach the best and most suited treatment option for your condition. Wishing you lots of luck.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes
