Could Thyroid Goitre Cause Coughing At Night?

Can night coughing be caused by a thyroid goiter? I have been cough and choking only at night for the last 2+1/2 years. and it disrupts my sleep. I do have a goiter and wonder if it could be the reason. I have tried allergy meds with no avail. it doesn t matter where I am home, vacation, etc. I still cough at night. I do have asthma but this is different. my lungs don t feel involved. and it does feel like I have mucous in my throat and I am actually choking on it and coughing. I also sleep very propped up and it still happens.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Thyroid goitre, especially if it is large enough can cause cough. It happens most often at night times because of the back pressure exerted by the enlarged glands. Since it causes pressure on tracheal rings, it causes irritation of mucosa and thus stimulating cough reflex. This happens more often when you sleep in upright position. It can be reduced by sleeping in lateral position.
The best remedy is to get it removed surgically or treated conservatively so that it will regress completely.
Hope the information provided would be useful.
All the best.
