Could The Medications For Heart Attack Cause Weight Gain?

I had a heart attack a little over a year ago. Had a stent in one artery. I take Plavix, Diovan, Metoporol, Crestor and Zetia as well as CoQ10, Omega 3 fish oil, vitamin D3, and a multi vitamin. I also have a vertebrae in my lower back that is out of place and makes excersize and walking painful. I try to be as active as possible. Could my medications be causing me to gain weight?

Greetings,
With regards to your question on medications,Metoporol is a beta blocker used for hypertension. It is recommended that a low sodium, low calorie diet be followed with this particular medication. So there is a recommendation there, please reduce your sodium and your calories. Sodium should not be higher than 2,300 mg (close to a tsp of sodium chloride). To lower calories a general guide is if you want to lose 1/2 lb. a week, cut down 500 calories per day. Monitor blood pressure and talk to doctor if changes are started. Plavix should not affect wt. Diovan - avoid salt substitutes and again, follow a low calorie, low sodium diet. Make certain hydration is maintained which is usually 1 cc per calorie consumed. A general recommendation is 2 Liters a day unless restricted by your doctor. Zetia is not on my list as causing weight gain. I certainly hope I have given you the answers you want and any further changes in your diet/lifestyle should be discussed with your doctor and your personal nutritionisit. It was an honor to serve you. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN - Nutritionist
