Could The Loss Of Sense Of Smell And Taste Be Due To Sinusitis?

My son lost his taste and smell due to his sinus. He just had Sinus surgery along with septoplasty and Turbinate surgery. The only smell he was able to smell before was a nasty mucus smell and he is smelling that same smell even after surgery. His surgery was 2 days ago. My question is what is the likelyhood that he will be able to smell again

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain loss of sense of taste and smell after sinus surgery is not an abnormal finding as it occurs due to sinus congestion which is also evident immediately after surgery..
As he is already able to smell mucous then you need not to worry about it as the sense of smell and taste is not lost and as the healing will proceed the sense of smell and taste will be regained..
You need to follow the instructions given to you by your treating surgeon and take the medications like antibiotics, decongestants, mucolytics and painkillers accordingly and do followups as and when required..
Hopefully the sense of taste and smell will regain in 2 weeks less or more..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
