Could Swelling And Burning Sensation In Throat Be Indicative Of Throat Cancer?

Hi, since last 4-5 days I have a swollen throat and difficulty in swallowing. I can feel physical appearance of tonsils on either sides of my throat. Also feel a burning sensation in throat. The whole situation started when I travelled in cold weather at night. I do casually smoke. Could this be symptoms of throat cancer or tonsillitis problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hello,
i can understand your concern.
do not think about throat cancer.
the symptoms and the history of travel in cold weather clearly indicate about a throat infection most probably an acute tonsillitis.
the following simple measures would help you
1. do salt water gargles with lukewarm water.
2. avoid cold things such as icecreams.
3. if you have a running nose, steam inhalation is advised. add karvol plus to the water. this gives a soothing effect.
4. an anti inflammatory drug like ibuprofen twice daily will help in reducing the pain and inflammation.
5. if these measures donot relieve your symptoms, an antibiotic like augmentin(amoxicillin+clavulanate)for five would be prescribed.
hope i have answered your concerns.
feel free to ask further queries.
thanks for choosing HCM
