Could Numbness In Tongue Be Due To Nerve Damage?

Hi, I just went to the dentist yesterday and during the injection of the numbing stuff, there was a shock of pain that went through my tongue for a short second and now, a day later, a tiny piece of my tongue is still a little numb and it feels texture differently. Visually it is no different from the rest of my tongue, no bleeding or holes or anything. could there be nerve damage? I have to go back to get my wisdom teeth out next week. should I wait that long to tell them about it or do something else about it? Will the feeling come back eventually?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain the symptoms that you have explained of having a shock like pain during injection that way along the tongue too indicate that there is injury to the lingual nerve which is caused due to pricking of the nerve during injection of local anaesthesia..

The nerve injury can lead to prolonged numbness in the area supplied by it and the recovery depends on the severity of the nerve damage..

In case if there is reversible damage to the nerve the recovery takes place after some time but the time that will be taken depends on the severity and it is uncertain to tell as it can take from days to weeks to months and even years to resolve..

In case of permanent damage the recovery will not take place..

In case if you have to get injection on the same side where there is nerve injury i would not recommend you to get an anaesthetic injection on the affected side..

In case of opposite side you can proceed with the treatment..
