Thanks you for you question. Potassium is needed in the body for the correct functioning of all body cells most especially heart muscle cells and other muscle cells and nerve cells. A low body potassium can be caused by inadequate intake, excessive loss through the gastro-intestinal pathway that is through vomiting and a diarrhoea, and medications which cause excessive urinary loss of Potassium. The signs of low potassium are many and widely varied from muscle weakness to muscle pains and cramps, irregular heartbeat and generalised paresthesias (tingling and numbness). So yes your diet MIGHT have been poor in Potassium or you might have lost a lot of Potassium as the signs and symptoms you present are consistent with low body potassium. I would advice you eat a banana or two in a day and you see your consulting physician for further management with potassium supplementation drugs. I wish you a quick recovery. Good luck
