Could Injury To Throat Be The Cause Of Painful Swallowing?
I had a football game today and I took a helmet to the throat, at first I had trouble breathing and uncontrollable gag reflex. This only lasted a minute or less. After those problems went away I had pain swallowing and talking and 8 hours after the game its still quite painfull. The pain from swallowing comes from the top right of the throat but to the touch it hurts on the lower right of the throat. Is there anything to be concerned with? Thank you.
Hi. This is a serious problem. There will be congestion and swelling of this part of the throat. This is a type of throttling injury and should be investigated by an Endoscopy so that the extent of the swelling can be determined. You need to take an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines for 7 days, take liquid diet only. If required you may need to undergo CT scan of the throat.
