Could Heaviness In Chest And Breathlessness Be Due To Heart Burn?

I feel like i may be having heartburn? But i have never had it before? I am 18 years old and for the past couple days especially during the night my chest feels almost as if a 400 pound man is sitting on top of my sternum and i really cannot breathe. I started taking prilosec OTC yesterday and regularly eating TUMS which has helped minimally. Do you think this is heart burn?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Most likely it is doudenal ulcer. A duodenal ulcer is a type of peptic ulcer that occurs in the duodenum, the beginning of the small intestine. Peptic ulcers are eroded areas in the lining of stomach and duodenum, which result in abdominal pain, possible bleeding, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Characterstic feature of doudenal ulcer is that pain occurs during night time, a duodenal ulcer is usually caused by an infection with a germ (bacterium) called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), endoscopy should be done to rule out the site of ulcers. No its not heart burn its duodenal ulcers.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ramesh Kumar
