Could Enlarged Lymph Node On The Neck Be A Matter Of Concern?

My son woke up with the painless enlarged lymph node on the neck. It literally appeared overnight. I am freaking out! The node itself is smaller and harder than the outside swelling. What is it? He had cold at the beginng of January. Now he is still blowing his nose. Is it just virus or something more serious. Myself prone to frequent swelling of lymph nodes but it is always painful. Thank you.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
Lymph node enlargement may not be always painful.
Lymph node enlargements are painful in cases of acute inflammation.
An associated cold could be the cause of lymph node enlargement.
Infections are a common cause of lymph node enlargement however, an aspiration cytology from the enlarged lymph node is required.
I suggest you you to consult your primary healthcare provider for clinical assessment and aspiration cytology.
In aspiration cytology, cells are aspirated using a needle, cells are spread on a slide and stained with appropriate stains.
The stained cells are examined microscopically.
This investigation gives information about the nature of the lesion.

Thanks and take care
