Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Could Hydrochlorothiazide Be The Reason For Low Potassium?
I was recently hospitalized with low potassium--2.5. The dr. decided it was due to the hydrochlorothiazide I was taking for high blood pressure. Was on it for 8 months. I also have a cyst at the head of my pancreas that has been watched for several years. Was stable until last year when it grew some. Have not had scope yet this year. Also have cysts on the adrenals. Could any of that play into the low potassium problem? 56 year old female, 5 2, 156 lbs.
Hi welcome to HCM Hydrochlorathiazide group of drugs definetely cause electrolyte imbalances. Also cysts in the adrenal glands leads to more sodium retention and potassium loss ,hence low potassium in the body.So your problem could be due to both the causes. So immediately speak to your doctor regarding change of your drug. These drugs should be used only under strict supervision of serum.electrolytes for every 3months.For low pottassium take potklor syrup and coconut water regularly.Get CT abdomen to know the size and number of cysts at the earliest.Consult endocrinologist for treating hormonal disturbances due to cysts.Consult your treating doctor for further queries and expert management. Thankyou.
