Could Crestor Be The Cause For Depression And Anxiety?

Can depression be a side-effect of Crestor? I started Crestor about 2 years ago, developed a severe major depression at about the same time and have been on SSRIs, had ECT, psychotherapy...but there is a residual depression and anxiety that is not responding to treatment. I wonder if Crestor can be contributing. I am 69, white, male, psychologist, recent prostatectomy.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. Crestor is Rosuvastatine and the drug is a commonly used drug for weight loss and in cases of high cholesterol conditions. The drug is relatively safe drug but it is known to worsen depression in some individuals. The drug can cause poor response to anti-depressant drugs. You had episode of major depression and now have residual depression not responding to drugs. Crestor could be the one factor that is causing the persistent depression. If the depressive symptoms are severe please visit your psychiatrist to add some adjunctive drug for severe depressive symptoms or to prescribed some other safer drug in place of crestor. This would help to reduce your symptoms of depression.

Thanks, I hope this helps. Take care
