HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Montair is montelukast, it is normally used for asthmatics and persons with a history of allergies. It reduces the body's allergic or inflammatory response.

If the cough and secretions are related to allergies , then this medication will help with his symptoms. He can continue to use it as long as his allergies are being provoked by the stimulus. He can also use a topical nasal spray, this would help if the cough is related to nasal secretions.

If the symptoms are related to an upper respiratory tract infection then they will improve within a few days to a week. The montair will help in this instance as well but this is not an indication for its use.
In the case of a cold, a cough suppressant and mucolytic may also help.

I hope this helps

Pulmonologist Dr. Kannuvellil E Rajan 's  Response
Hello Sonuji,

‘Montair-5’ contains 5 mg of montelukast. This is used to prevent inflammation of wind pipe and its branches. It also helps to increase the diameter of the tubes conducting air into lungs. This is a common drug used in children with symptoms as mentioned by you.

Does your 5-years-old child have yellowish phlegm throughout the day or only once or twice on waking? How much is the amount of phlegm - spoonful or half a cup in a day? A good amount of yellow phlegm (sputum) through the day suggests an infection of the wind pipe or lungs.

If the child’s cough and yellow phlegm persists, Montair-5 alone may not be sufficient. Please consult your doctor with this problem. He will prescribe an appropriate antibiotic if he diagnoses an infection.

Hope your child gets over this problem soon. Thanks a lot for using healthcaremagic.com
