Cough, Breathlessness, Wheezing, Abdominal Tightening, Congestion In Chest, Raspy Throat, Mucus. Is Something Wrong With Lung?
My wife coughed on some steak at dinner and could not breathe at the time I administered a mild form of the Heimlich maneuver (slight bend) and pulled in on her abdomen. She stopped wheezing and started coughing. This coughing continued for about 30-45 seconds afterwards. We noticed a piece of meat on my shoe later but are not aware of any other meat that she may have choked up.
Our fear is that she may have taken some material into her lung, as her chest feels mildly congested and she has an occasional cough in which she can taste a mucus like phlem substance. In addition, she feels like her throat is a little raspy around her trachea area to mid sternum (feels like very mild bronchitis to her-had it before) and maybe down an inch or so (at least she is aware of it).
Hi ! It was good that you did a Heimlich maneuver to relieve the possible obstruction to the throat by the piece of meet. The present cough with mucus could be due to the earlier bronchitis of her which might have got precipitated by the choking. If the cough increases with fever or breathlessness, I would advise to show her to your family physician who may clinically examine your wife before advising for a X ray chest if need be. Otherwise the management will be as that for an attack of bronchitis, which includes bronchodilators, may be an antibiotic, some steam inhalation, and nebulisation if need be. Wishing your wife an early recovery.
