Constipation After Taking Doxycycline For UTI

a year ago I developed urinary retention which turned into a uti , I took doxycycline for 6- 8 months which seemed to alleviate the uti, but constipated me a lot. I now suffer from periodic constipation which affects my urinary stream. I have tried staying gluten free as a possible measure to avoid inflammation. I am still really unsure if that will help however. To describe the stool, its sandy and grainy looking, comes out in parts and is never large always small and pencil like. The doctor ruled out my kidney from scans, and also checked my prostate, both tests came up with nothing. I had a cystoscopy as well but no luck with that either. I am perfectly healthy, but still I have constant constipation -no blood is in the stool -undigested food is seen in the stool To add I feel as if I never completely empty my bladder, it feels like something, like urine is stuck in the shaft of penis

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your detailed history and understood your concerns.
First of all taking Doxycyclin for such a long period of 6 to 8 months seems too high unless taken with caution of intermittent stoppage of the antibiotic. This can lead to disturbed intestinal bacterial flora and bring about the changes in bowel habits.
Hence I would advise you to take curds/yogurts, pre and probiotics regularly.
Secondly the stool softeners and laxatives in appropriate dosages should help to have normal bowel habits.
Feeling of urine in urethra indicated urethral problems and hence should have Urethrography and Urethroscopy to know the problem and get treated accordingly since other investigations are normal.
Also get a per-rectal digital examination and ano-proctoscopy to see for any anal canal wall stricture, the commonest cause of pencil shaped stools.
All other investigations as per the opinion of a Urologist and a Gastroenterologist and GI Surgeon should get to the actual diagnosis and proper management.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
