Constantly falling asleep, lack of energy, sleeping at dinner. Causes and treatment?

My boyfriend constantly falls asleep at inappropriate times. It is out of his control. He gets plenty of sleep. He will have plenty of energy one moment and then the next he is delirious and absolutely cannot stay awake. this will happen mid sentence or in the middle or dinner for example. Any idea what could be causing this or a way to prevent these times? Thank you
