Constant Dizziness, Low Hemoglobin Count. Lost Weight After Gastric Bypass. Chances Of Internal Bleeding During Surgery?
My friend has a hemoglobin count of 3, HCT of 10 and a WBC count of 1. These counts were measured when she went into her local doctor's office, because of constant dizziness. She had no recent bouts of fatigue coupled with the fatigue. She also had gastric bypass surgery approximately two years ago, and has lost a considerable amount of weight (~70 lbs). Do you think the loss of WBCs is due to internal bleeding as a result of the gastric bypass?
Since the procedure was 2 years ago, it is not likely that the low count would be related to bleeding secondary to the surgery.
After surgery there may be difficulty absorbing iron from the gut ,this may lead to iron deficiency anemia. It is also possible to become deficient in vitamin b12 which can also result in anemia.
Normally it is essential to take replacements to prevent deficiencies in these and other vitamins.
At such a low Hb, she may need transfusion provided she does not have any objection.
Additional bloods and investigations would be necessary to determine the exact cause.
I hope this helps
