Consistent sore throat, redness at the throat opening, pimple on uvula, acne breakout, enlarged lymph nodes on neck. Cause?

My 15 year old son has had a sore throat for 4 months. It is red in the very back of the throat and around the opening of his throat. There is a pimple looking thing on the Uvula . He has had 3 swabs that came back with no bacterial infection . the Dr. Says its viral. He has broken out in acne, has enlarged lymph glands on the front and back of his neck. I have kept him off of sugar and dairy and feel him organic nourishing food. I have given him all types of herbal teas. What do you think he is suffering from. The Drs say its viral and to wait it out. He has no fever.

ENT Specialist Dr. Sriram Nathan's  Response

hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your son's problem regarding the throat and neck problem.

Since his throat is congested or red as described by you and since he has lymph node enlargement you need to start him on a course of antibiotic irrespective of the results of the throat swab. You can start him on amoxycillin-clavulanate combination 625 mg twice daily after food for five days and pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily before food for two weeks. Your doctor will know about these.

Since you are already keeping him off sugar and dairy foods and giving him organic nourishing food, you are in the right track.

You need to wait for a week or two for the lesions to subside and the glands to regress. If however it does not become better you need to consult an ENT/ Dermatologist so that they can investigate further (endoscopy and CT Neck) and give you a directed treatment.

take care and hope you get well soon

Dr Sriram Nathan
