Cold, cough. Sharp pain in the left side of ribs towards back. What could it be?

I have had a cold for a week or so and now coughing for several days. Sometimes they are pretty good coughing spells. Last night I started getting a very sharp pain in my left side toward the back rib area. Mostly only when I cough or twist. But also very sore to the touch like a bad bruise . What is this and should I go to dr. Or just take it easy?

Hello

Tanks for writing to H.C.M. for your query.

I have gone through your query regarding cold , cough, and pain on back of chest specially on coughing, turning and even touching.

Your symptoms are indicating that you are suffering from acute respiratory tract infection ? with pneumonitis. Other possibilties of chest pain may be dry plurisy or myalgia. To frame the diagnosis you are advice for these basic investigations-

(a) X-Ray chest (P.A.View).

(b) Culture and sensitivity of throat swab.

(c)Blood- CBC, ESR, blood sugar (F. & P.P.)

(d) Urine - Routine & Microscopic.

After a thorough examination and co-relating the investigation's reports one can reach to correct diagnosis which may later on plan for treatment.

Regards.
