Chronic Lower Back Pain Near Kidney. Feeling A Lump And Soreness. No Fever. Reason?

My sister recently suffered chronic lower back pain near her kidney which she had to take two lots of painkillers for the other night. She said it left the area feeling sore and a sensation of a lump in that area. Her urine does not seen to be smelly or infected and she had no fever . This has happened a couple of times now. What could be causing it.
