Child Is Neonate. Kept In Icu, For Preterm, Jaundice. Got Photo-therapy. Tran-fusing Of Blood Needed?
My baby is neonate running 2weeks n she is in nicu firstly she is preterm n she suffered from jaundice after that low pletelets so she got phototherapy n plasma transfusion after that her hb is only 9.5gm/ dl I would like to know it is necessary to transfuse blood or not .i think it will be fine after exclusive breast feeding.i would be gratful to know the answer as soon as possible
Hello and sorry to hear that your baby was a preterm delivery and presently in the NICU for management of jaundice.
The decision to transfuse or not is guided by many other contributing factors. most importantly, knowing whether the baby is tolerating the anemia or not. if the baby isn't tolerating the anemia, i think the doctor's will discuss this option. Transfusion is never risk free and reason why doctors are pretty cautious about doing it if it can be avoided. I believe there must be reasons why they have not done this. Also, the value 9.5g/dl isn't too bad.
If you are considering exclusive breastfeeding for your baby, I say a very big congratulations to you. It increases the mother/child bonding while at the same time providing the best food source for the baby. Keep up!
However, feel free. Discuss with the treating doctors. Let them know what your thoughts and concerns are so that they can address them. While hoping this answers your questions, wish your baby a speedy recovery!
