Child Having Fever, Cold Sores On Lips, Gums Red, Sore Throat, Swallowing Difficulty. Strep Test Negative. Cause?

My daughter is 9 years old and has been sick since October 31st. Shes been fevered, shes developed a couple cold sores or ulcers on her bottom lip that look pussy and her gums are blood red. I have never seen anyones gums that blood red. Shes been complaining of a very sore throat, hurts when she swallows.
I took her to dr. 2 days ago and they did a throat swab and rapid strep test which came back negative. Could a virus cause all this, including the blood red gums?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,
There is a generalized inflammatory reactions going on in the upper respiratory tract of the child. Viruses can as well cause all these symptoms, and a viral origin is even more probable in this case. Treatment in case is mainly symptomatic. The airways should be freed with the use of Saline, local anti histamines could reduce nasal secretions but should be well supervised. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs would help in reducing the fever, inflammation of the gums and controlling pain. Persistence of these initial symptoms might require a complete blood count to document other infection other Strept or ascertain the gravity of the disease. See primary care doctor for management plan. Kind regards
