Child Has Yellow In Corner Of Eyes. Ultrasound Showed Collapsed Gall Bladder. Anything Serious?

Hi Doctor, My baby is 50 days old, and just 4 days back his eyes were seen yellow around the corners. Pathology tests revealed total bilirubin as 6.6mg/dl while the indirect bilirubin as 5.4. Today ultrasound was performed and it revealed everything normal except for Gall Bladder which was collapsed. Do you think anything serious for him ?

Pediatrician, Surgery 's  Response
Hi
Thank you for your query
Well bilirubin of 6.6 at that age is definitely not comfortable. Your baby may have hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) or may have a disease called extra hepatic biliary atresia (EHBA). The later calls for a surgery and the sooner it is done, the better. A test called the HIDA scan can reveal more but it has to be done after 5 days of drugs (after priming). A distended gall bladder on ultrasound rules out EHBA however contracted gall bladder can mean anything. You should consult a pediatric surgeon for the same.
Take care
