Child Has Lost Weight. History Of Ear Infections. Reason?

My 1 year old grandson has been fighting numerous ear infections since Mid-Sept. Now they say in the last month he has lost 1.5 pounds and some height as well. I realize he doesn t want to eat when he doesn t feel good, but what would make him shrink? He s very petite to begin (18lbs) so backsliding is a little unnerving. He is walking, talking and hitting other year old milestones well. Can you shed some light on this?

Hello there,

It is unlikely for your child to have lost height. Height may be lost in conditions that are serious in nature like spinal fractures or lower limb pathology. Since he has recurrent ear infections, there are 2 possibilities. One that the infection has been inadequately treated or the ear infections have been due to a compromised immune symptom which would require a more thorough evaluation. Well a weight of 18 pounds is less for a 1 year old but not alarmingly low. Since he has suffered from infections, his nutrition should have been good to ensure he does not lose further weight.

Kindly get him re evaluated with an ENT specialist for a careful ear examination.

Take care.

Hi
The child may have weight loss from infections and many other reasons.
But length or height foes not fall down!
It must be a measuring error!
Do not worry!
The baby will catch up growth once the infection clears
All the best
