Child Has Lost Bladder Control. Physical Or Behavioral Problem?

My 7 years old is wetting his pants once or twice per week. He had accidents before, but not this often. He is very happy, well rounded bright child. He says that he can't control it. Is this a physical or behavioral problem? We keep him very busy all day with activities. Could this be the reason? Maybe he is not resting enough or too much pressure?

Pediatrician 's  Response
It is very unusual for a boy his age to have this happen and for that reason he needs a thorough evaluation by his doctor first. His urine needs to be checked for infection as well as perhaps a rectal exam to be sure that he is not constipated or has some issue with the muscles that control both bowel and bladder control.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Is he wet during day time or night time.

If he is wet during night time please take the following measures.

1. Do not give him water to drink or other liquids after evening. At least reduce the intake during evening hours.

2. Ask him to pass urine before he goes to bed.

3. Reward him for nights he is dry.

4. Do not scold him for getting wet.

Get him examined by your doctor. Some time investigations like urine routine and microscopy etc may be required to rule out urinary tract infections.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
